Bhajanai or Hinducommunity prayer was brought toSouth India by great teachers like Bodhendraal, SridharaYaaval and Gopala Krishna Bhagawathar. The Bhajan sampradaya which wasenunciated by these great Gurus were adopted to sing Bhajans of Lord Sastha orayyapa both in case of Ayyappan Vilakkuand Sastha Preethi by many people. Side by side with the developmentof the Bhajan Sampradaya, The kalyana uthsavam(Celebration of marriage) of the Goddesses like Radha, Sita and Rukmaniwere being celebrated by the devotees. Apart from the normal procedure ofBhajans, these also included enacting of the marriage of the Goddesses, alongwith an adaptation of the ceremony, with music as well as dance. Among these the most popularappears to be Radha Kalyanam.
Possibly based on these, the devotees of Villivakkam of Madras who were worshipping the Kalyana Varada Sastha along with his consorts Poorna and Pushkala, under the leadership of Sri R.ViswanathaSarma, systematized the procedure for celebrating Sastha Kalyanamor the marriage of Sastha with his consorts Poorna and Pushkala. LordSastha the son of Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as Mohini and Lord Shiva and has been worshipped all over Tamil Nadu in the form of Sastha andAyyanar. In both these cases, LordSastha was considered to be married toPoorna and Pushkala. Ayyappa or ManiKanda, who was an Avathar of LordSastha and who lived as the adopted son of the pandya king of Pandalam was aNithya Brahmachari though in Arayankavtemple of Kerala, it is believed thathe married Pushkala devi (Some say Prabhavathi ) of the Saurashtriancommunity and he is consecrated with hiswives Poorna and Pushkala in Achal Koviltemple. Legend says that the temples of AchanKOvil and Aryankav wereconsecrated by Lord Parasurama himself much before the incarnation of LordSastha as Ayyappa. Lord Sastha also is supposed to have a son called Sathyaka, reforred to as Chella Pillai(Darling son). Pushkala is supposed to be the daughter of Palinja varman, who ruledover Nepal.

Poorna is supposed to be the daughter of a king called Pinchaka varman who was supposed to haveruled over the Cochin kingdom of KeralaIt Seems Palinja varman of Nepalwanted to sacrifice his daughterPushkala in search of immortality for himself. When Pushkala prayed to LordShiva to protect her, it is believed that he sent Lord Sastha for protectingher. Lord Sastha saved her and also made king Palinja Varman leave out his ideas of gettingimmortality. The king requested Sasthato marry his daughter Pushkala and heaccepted that and he married her.
Afterwards the king Pinchaka Varman ofCochin who went for hunting in the forestwas attacked by devils and ghosts. It seems he prayed to Lord Sastha. Lord Sastha came and droveaway the ghosts and devils. The kingPinchaka Varman it seems offered hisdaughter Poorna to lord Sastha, who married her also.
When king Palinja varman knew about anothermarriage of Sastha, it is believedthat he cursed Lord Sastha, that hewould be born as a human being and would live as a Brahmachari. But thereare differing opinions on this story.
According to Brahmanda Purana, Poorna was thesister of Upendra and got married to Lord Sastha on Chithra Pournamiday. There is also a story that Poorna was the daughter of a king ofKanchipuram called Shivapala and it is believed that Lord Sastha got married to her in Kanchipuramtemple.
There is a temple for Lord Sastha along with Poorna and Pushkala inKanchipuram In Aryankav it is believed thata group of Saurashtra weaverssettled in Madurai were passing through the temple and at the time a girl with them called Pushkala (some sayPrabhavathi) attained maturity.Theyentrusted the girl to the priest of Aryankavand went to do their trade. By the time they came back, it seems thatgirl got married to Sastha in that place. In memory of this even todaythe people of Saurashtra communityvisit the Aryankav temple and celebrate the marriage of their girl toLord Sastha, following Saurasthracustoms. In the Sasthakalyanam, it is assumed thatPoorna and Pushkala were the consorts ofSastha and were the daughters of Palinja varman of Nepal and PinjakaVarman of cochin. The kalyanam isperformed imitating therituals of a Tamil Brahmin wedding. The Sastha Kalyanam by the Villivakkam groupof devotees is being performed for the past many years. In 1975, they broughtout a compilation of the procedure used to perform this Kalyanam along withsongs, stotras as well as Marriage Manthras. A new edition of the book wasbrought out by them in 2006.
